Carvers "Boxes" Something is Not RightHave you ever had that eerie feeling in the back of your mind thatsomething just is not honest? It is as if there is some unknown rea countersign that a speckle has a different meaning then what is obvious. This feeling is thedisguised guts of Raymond Carvers story, "Boxes". In this story the sonseems to be experiencing this feeling as his nonplus decides to move once more.There are chess openings in the story line which shows that the sons dialogue does notmatch up with his thoughts through protrude the situation. These commotions highlight a inscrutable theme that associates the sons feelings round his perplex sorrowful with herdeath.One of the reasons the son unconsciously believes he will never see hismother again, is because his mother mentions to a greater extent than once in the story thatshe would like to die. These gaps in the story where the mother mentions dyingin the same scenes that have to do with her movi ng associates her moving withher death. One instance that she mentions dying is where she is complainingabout the weather in Longview "I mean it, honey. I dont want to see thisplace again except from my coffin. I hate this g.d. place. I dont know why Imoved here. I wish I could just die and model it over with" (p. 413). I do notthink the son believes she really wants to die but she puts the idea of herdying in his subconscious. There is a gap at that point that is up to thereader to figure out. The gap is widened farther in that same scene. The sonremembers thinking about a objet dart working on a power line. The man leaned outsupported only by a safety knock and the son thought about if the man fell. Theson is still on the echo with his mother "I didnt have any idea what I was firing to say next. I had to say something. But I was filled with slimedfeelings, thoughts no son should admit to. Youre my mother, I said finally.What can I do to help?" (p. 413). What w ere these thoughts? Why doesnt thenarrator tell us? The son cannot help being affected by these powerful words ofhis mother. This gap in the story is important because the son is thinkingabout how that man working on the pole could easily die if his safety belt doesnot hold. At this point he also has unmentionable thoughts about his mother.
