Perceptual Maps Essay

Easier Said Than Done free essay sample

In the wake of seeing Obama’s first term and the different international strategy issues he has confronted, there are ways Obama has stayed faithful to his obligation and good ways from the Bush organization, however he has likewise proceeded with a few key parts of the â€Å"Bush Doctrine,† being not able to ‘walk his discussion. ’ I contend that on account of automaton use as a type of inevitable danger safeguard, Obama is utilizing legitimate barrier began by the Bush organization and proceeding to arm Unmanned Aerial Vehicle’s (UAV’s) so as to take up arms against fear mongering. Be that as it may, the present president has moved away from Bush’s dependence on unilateralism to fathom world clash, particularly in Libya. I will initially present the legitimateness of the utilization of automatons and how Obama has worked off Bush-time contentions, and afterward move to Libya and feature the present organizations push for multilateralism in a post-Bush world. So as to give a short guide of the paper to follow, I’ll give a short rundown of the important focuses. To begin with, I will talk about Obama’s continuation of Bush’s utilization of automatons in war. The continuation depends on the lawful rule Bush made which empowered this utilization, a standard Obama has remained behind. Second, I will detail a disparity Obama’s organization took from Bush’s strategies as multilateralist ways to deal with outside clash. The definition I have utilized for multilateralism is a crusade or mediation is a battle or intercession with shared duty among a few distinct gatherings or countries. On account of Bush, his strategy are viewed as progressively one-sided, or tasks drove significantly by just one gathering without submitted collaboration from different gatherings. There are a few instances of this all through the most recent four years, so I will concentrate on exclusively the Libyan intercession for curtness. At that point I will envelop everything with a short end. Building a case for ramble use in the War on Terror was a lot of a foundation of the 43rd President of the United States. During a discourse at West Point, Bush cautioned, â€Å"if we hang tight for dangers to completely emerge, we will have stood by excessively long. † (11) Beginning in 2004 as a major aspect of the â€Å"Bush Doctrine,† ramble strikes have been completed in Northwest Pakistan and zones of Yemen and Somalia as a way to confine American setbacks. 3) According to current CIA executive John Brennan: â€Å"They drastically diminish the risk to US faculty and to blameless regular citizens, particularly considered against gigantic arms that can cause injury and passing a long ways past the expected objective. † (9) Due to the disposal of hazard to human life rambles give, the quantity of automaton strikes has expanded exponentially since Obama got to work, taking off from a multi year aggregate of 44 out of five Bush a long time to 200 out of three years under Obama. (4) Using this safeguard as a military methodology, there is little contention ramble strikes can keep American warriors more secure. What took into account a genuine continuation of unmanned air strikes is the lawful point of reference that Bush had the option to build up and hand down to Obama. With late concern brought about by the automaton murdering of American-conceived pastor Anwar al-Awlaki, Congress has scrutinized Obama’s lawful guard. The strikes are shielded in two discussions, one strong and the other genuinely dark. In the occasion of focusing on Al-Qaeda, the shared condition of war with their association takes into account all employments of powers so as to crush foe warriors. The subsequent resistance originates from the up and coming danger part of universal self-preservation. As indicated by universal law, the United States is allowed to step in when it believes itself to be â€Å"under the prompt danger of foe assault. † (1) Considering the abstract force that is put in the hands of the CIA, fast approaching danger has drawn the most honed reactions. Venturing to Obama’s resistance on account of al-Awlaki was an amazing partner in John Yoo, the Bush organization legal advisor who wrote lawful updates for the war on dread, expressing â€Å"If an American joins a nemy with which we are at war, he is or she is a legitimate objective as a foe soldier. That has been the standard since our commencement. † (2) Even however the utilization of automaton strikes has been its generally disputable in the previous two months of Obama’s administration, it is a military procedure set up since the Bush organization. In spite of the likeness es between the 21st century’s initial two presidents, there are additionally some profound cracks between their ways to deal with remote tact. Bush’s arrangements are generally seen as on a very basic level one-sided, particularly when you burrow past the outside of representative motion and search for the meaningful activities. From a similar discourse at West Point referenced before, Bush is cited, â€Å"we can't place our confidence in the expression of dictators, who gravely sign non-multiplication bargains, and afterward foundationally break them†¦ (our security will require) a military that must be prepared to strike at a minutes notice in any dim corner of the world. (11) This doubt of countries other than his own depicts Bush in a manner that seems reluctant to bargain at an early stage in his administration, particularly in the 2003 Iraq War. The U. S. took on the most hazard and took care of the most expenses in what might generally be considered as a contention against unilateralism. The antecedent to this war was Afghanistan, another similarly disliked war during Bush’s time. You could conten d that Bush sought after a multilateralist approach with this contention, revitalizing post-9/11 help from in excess of twelve partners. Be that as it may, what at first resembles a group way to deal with Afghanistan really flounders after two focuses. To begin with, you have the deplorability of the Twin Towers, a demonstration of psychological warfare which shook the whole western world enthusiastically. Coalitions were maintained with no kind of exertion from the Bush organization. Second, Bush’s multilateralist approach was representative right off the bat however when push came to push, his organization depended on assuming control over business, particularly as duties from different countries started to blur with acceleration. The disagreeable open response to these wars in all likelihood affected Obama, who steadfastly restricted the Bush organizations dynamic in Iraq. Tending to the U. N. General Assembly in 2009, Mr. Obama asked, â€Å"Those who used to chasten America for acting alone on the planet can't presently hold on and trust that America will take care of the world’s issues alone. We have looked for in word and deed another period of commitment with the world, and right now is an ideal opportunity for us all to take a lot of duty regarding a worldwide reaction to worldwide difficulties. (13) An early pundit of Bush’s brutish way to deal with outside issues, Obama discharged shots in 2008 during his battle: â€Å"instead of intense talk and no activity, we have to do what Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan did and utilize all components of American force †including extreme, principled, and direct tact. † (12) This multi-sidelong and helpful way to deal with remote relations is a push by the Obama organization to restore poor binds with countries basic to the United States strengthening its predominance. One of his first moves towards this was the Combined Task Force, amassed to battle robbery in the Gulf of Aden in August 2008. The US, Russia, France, China, Japan, and India met up to pivot order of an armada of 15 war vessels in the locale. (6) on this, the best present case of this takeoff from the Bush precept can be found in Libya, where the president has a made a strong duty to support global collaboration and make light of the United States as a solitary wolf. To start with, we sat tight for the Arab League to welcome us to make a move. At that point we got the U. N. Security Council to approve that activity. And afterward we demanded that the air war be attempted and told by NATO, not without anyone else. By winning understanding from NATO partners to expect order of the battle and making sure about an UN Security Council goals approving â€Å"all fundamental means,† Obama started the Libyan clash by solidifying worldwide authenticity and struggle sharing from a large number of its alliance individuals. (13) By â€Å"leading from behind,† the U. S. as ready to deliberately utilize its profoundly propelled military innovation so as to open the entryway for a to a great extent European suffocation of the Libyan adversaries. In summation, American Foreign Policy in the hands of Obama doesn't have the enormous makeover from the Bush Doctrine that Obama guaranteed during his crusade. While there are a couple of key changes, as pr ove with the lean towards multilateralism, there are as yet a few proceeding with Bush-period strategies inside his organization. With regards to the automaton strikes, Obama has apparently increase their use after many idea he would iscontinue them. There is additionally proof of proceeded with Bush strategies in Guantanamo Bay and his guarantees against Syria dependent on compound weapons utilization. In spite of these similitudes, Obama keeps up a 49% positive view from the world, while Bush left with just 28%. An intriguing following stage in the examination of Foreign Policy from Bush to Obama would investigate the distinctions in prominence between the two. I can just guess that Bush might be a little mad about his successor’s suffering worldwide agreeability. Works Cited 1. Byers, Dylan. Obamas Drones, Eisenhowers Poison.  Politico. The act of PC hacking has existed in the field of Information Technology since the previous scarcely any decades. PC hacking includes a significant level of knowledge and commitment. Programmers are along these lines, profoundly proficient in PC frameworks, yet in addition in the security frameworks, which individuals utilize to keep programmers out and to make sure about their frameworks (Thomas, 2002). So as to hack into frameworks, programmers are required to have inside and out information on the frameworks, and most along these lines, need to consider the specific frameworks they need to hack into. As per Sterling (1989), so as to assemble information, a few programmers go to meetings so as to find out about new methods and simpler methods of hacking into frameworks. In the wake of hacking a framework, programmers access all sort of data in the framework. They in this way, can utilize the data in whatever way they wish. They can download this data, to duplicate it to their PC, or even erase the data, among different orders. In any case, contingent upon the sort of framework jacked into, just as the sort of data that is gotten to, the activities of a PC programmer may bring about negative results, basing on how the person controls and uses the data got to. For example, if a programmer hacks into the arrangement of a phone organization, the person in question may make calling cards, and change telephone numbers, among others (Sterling, 1989). As observed, PC hacking is viewed as a type of... This paper affirms that the subject of PC hacking, and PC hacking and morals stay fundamental in the current IT age. Morals is an angle, which people create after some time; and morals includes great conduct, which are essentially planned for improving, and not hurting others. Nonetheless, moral programmers will likewise utilize the cutting edge innovation to offer expanded framework security to associations. In any case, PC hacking influences all nations, thusly, it should be the aggregate obligation of nations to receive techniques that will assist with checking PC hacking.

Domestic Windmill using Bevel Gear Mechanism

Residential Windmill utilizing Bevel Gear Mechanism Presentation: CE1.1: In this profession scene, I will concentrate on one of the ventures which I have done while seeking after my college degree in Mechanical Engineering. This task helped me in understanding the working component of slant apparatuses and how sustainable assets can be utilized to create power. Foundation: CE 1.2: Wind vitality has been utilized for different purposes throughout the years. The idea of windmill was built up in the tenth century and has been improving from that point onward. The primary standard working of windmill is change of wind vitality to rotational vitality by methods for vanes called edges, which is then changed over into mechanical vitality with the assistance of angle gears. CE 1.3: The fundamental point of the task was to create multiple times the force than the genuine windmill (for example 4:1). It depends on the guideline of the force age in the genuine breeze plant. Another part of the venture was additionally utilizing the instruments of slope gears, orientation, shaft, and pulley to produce power from the genuine breeze plant. CE 1.4: The hierarchical structure of the venture is as per the following: CE 1.5: The accompanying exercises were fundamental to fruitful rivalry of the task: Being comparable to the time period given by the teacher. I needed to peruse books identified with slant apparatuses and windmill to comprehend the working system. Have conversations with venture director and colleague on the most proficient method to complete the work. Examine with lab specialists how to associate the angle gears with the poles. I proposed the structure of the windmill and completed the vital counts required. The undertaking documentation was finished alongside my colleague which introduced my finding and the outcomes to the task manager and the personnel. Individual Engineering Activity: CE 1.6 Chipping away at a venture is the most fascinating part where learning is exceptionally fundamental and critical in fruitful consummation of the undertaking. I previously moved toward my venture boss alongside my colleague to examine about the various thoughts. After cautious assessment, myself and my colleague chose to take a shot at something which helps in diminishing the contamination and working with sustainable assets. Which lead to taking a shot at power age of windmill with assistance of slant gears. CE 1.7 The underlying advance of the undertaking was to plan the model of the windmill and how to build up the association between the poles, apparatuses, engine, and batteries. The plan of the model was done utilizing AutoCAD programming. I took in the rudiments from Design of Machine Members subject and with the assistance of lab colleague comprehended the apparatuses basic for making the model. When our undertaking guide affirmed of the plan of windmill, the get together of parts was expected to get the working model of the proposed windmill. CE 1.8 When the parts were acquired for the finishing of windmill, my colleague and I had encountered trouble in building up an appropriate association, yet with the assistance of undertaking aide and lab professionals myself and my colleague had the option to get the riggings and the poles working. The windmill comprised of three vanes which were associated with an essential shaft and fan center point. This arrangement was then associated the apparatus and metal roller on the two its end. I at that point recommended that each pole be fixed to its separate dynamo utilizing gripper belts. The gripper belt associated between the poles and dynamo pulleys makes dynamo produce the electrical vitality. The force produced is put away in battery and utilized for household purposes. Approach to Care of Cancer Essay - 1375 Words

Approach to Care of Cancer (Essay Sample) Content: Approach to Care of CancerNameInstitutionApproach to Care of CancerOverview of CancerOver the last few years, the mortality rate from cancer has been growing steadily making this disease among the leading causes of death both in the developed and the developing world. According to estimates, more than one million people are diagnosed with cancer every single year and half of that number ends up dead. According to experts, cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of cells that multiply uncontrollably and have the capability of attacking other tissues within the body. The blood and lymph systems are so far the recognized mechanisms through which the cancer cells are transferred to different body tissues. At the present, there are over one hundred types of cancer that have been documented. This paper takes a close examination on the approach to the care of cancer, which consists of diagnosis and staging, the complications of cancer, as well as the available modalities tha t can be used to reduce the physical and psychological effects of cancer and its treatment.Diagnosis and StagingJust like any other disease, the ability to provide optimal care for patients suffering from cancer depends on the offering of well-timed and precise prognosis. Equally important to this process is the staging of cancer. The staging process is critical to the effective treatment of cancer as the mode of treatment is formulated depending on the stage and the degree of the cancer. Identifying the symptoms is the first step towards an effective diagnosis of cancer, and this is immediately followed by the presentation of these symptoms. The procedure of diagnosing cancer in most cases begins with the presentation of symptoms. The moment that cancer is suspected, doctors use a wide range of methods to detect the disease and each of them varies depending on the type of cancer. Some of the available methods for that are used by doctors to detect cancer are CT scans, x-rays, bone scans among other methods. Even if a patient is determined to be suffering from cancer, doctors always use biopsy and tissue examination as the final diagnosis method. In the recent past, there have been emerging technologies that are being used by pathologists to determine the presence of cancer with positron emission tomography (PET) and F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) being the most common (DeVita, Rosenberg, 2001).Once the doctor has ascertained the presence of cancer in a certain cell, the next most important stage before treatment can commence is staging. Staging is the simplest way of ascertaining the level of cancer and its exact placement. Staging defines the severity of a personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s cancer on the basis of the primary tumor, as well as on the level that the cancer has spread in the body. This is a critical stage since it makes it possible for doctors to create a prognosis, as well as to develop an ideal treatment modality for the patient. Comprehending the stage and ext ent of cancer is, therefore, one of the most important steps in the process of identifying clinical trials that are appropriate for individual patients. Although there are various methods of carrying out the staging process depending on individual patients, the main objective of the process is the same (DeVita, Rosenberg, 2001).There are four types that characterize cancer staging. The first is clinical staging, which determines the amount of cancer that there is based on the bodily examination as biopsies of the affected tissue. The other type is pathologic staging, which is only possible in individual patients who have had a tumor removed surgically to determine the level of the cancer. This stage usually involves the results from the clinical staging and the surgical process. The third type is the post-therapy or Post-Neoadjuvant Therapy Staging, which is done to determine the amount of cancer that has remained in the body after the initial treatment process. The last type is r estaging, which is used to establish the level of the recurring cancer. This last type of staging helps in determining the best modality of treating recurring cancer (Johnson, Gross, 2011).Cancer Complications and Side EffectsCancer patients are at greater risk of developing complications either due to the cancer itself or due to the available treatment options. Hyponatremia is the commonest of all the complications relating to cancer. Chemotherapy, which is the most common type of cancer treatment, is considered to be among the risk factors for this complication. This is mostly caused by the syndrome of inappropriate production of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), which may arise as a result of the ectopic creation of arginine vasopressin (AVP) by the cancerous tissue. Although hyponatremia might be caused by other chronic diseases, research shows that more than half of all the cases are caused by cancer. All the hyponatremia cases that are linked to cancer have been found to hinder t he patientà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s response to treatment as recovery. This mode of treatment deals with hyponatremia by openly obstructing the AVP biding with its receptors. Some of the drugs that are recommended for use in dealing with this condition include conivaptan, lixivaptan, and tolvaptan among others (Rubin, Williams, 2010).According to Bucholtz (2010), spinal cord compression (SCC) is also prevalent among cancer patients. It is estimated that more than 20,000 Americans suffering from cancer develop SCC each year. This number is estimated to be on the increase due to the enhanced treatment and the elongated survival in different cancers. This condition is mostly prevalent among patients with lung, breast, prostate, and kidney types of cancer. This complication is mostly brought about by the growth of metastatic tumor that has blocked the epidural space. The unhindered growth of the mass destroys the bony structure of the vertebrae and makes them feeble to the point where they collaps e. If not treated, this injury might lead to a permanent loss of neurologic function. Most clinicians today recommend the use of radiation therapy for the effective treatment of this complication. This therapy deals with the complication by reducing the volume of the lump and easing the SCC (Bucholtz, 2010).Another complication that often occurs in patients receiving cancer treatment is an anaphylactic reaction. Research has shown that close to 40% of cancer patients that are undergoing therapy are prone to an allergic reaction. Interestingly, the same drug that causes the allergic reaction is the same one that can treat the condition. Patients who react to their medication are stabilized by being taken off the drug before being reintroduced to the same drug. This means that patients should be taught on how to watch for the symptoms of drug reaction and report them to doctors for management. Another complication that occurs in a large number of patients with cancer and those undergo ing treatment is intense pain. This is usually treated by introducing pain killers alongside the cancer drugs (Rubin, Williams, 2010)....

Who has more power in ‘The Collector’ Clegg or Miranda - Literature Essay Samples

The Collector by John Fowles examines a battle for power and control between the introverted character of Clegg and the audaciously articulate Miranda. Power is defined as the possession of control, authority, or influence over others (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) that Clegg has been cheated of his entire life. Clegg was brought up with a poor education and little money, lacking any sort of affectionate relationships. Clegg, maybe for these reasons has a clear lack of sanity that causes a platonic addiction to the beautiful art student Miranda. Ultimately alluding to the abduction of Miranda once he wins a great sum of money, allowing Clegg to keep her captive in his basement cellar. Clegg’s insanity is the reason he keeps Miranda as a possession of beauty, much like one of the butterflies in his collection, obtaining complete physical power over her. The depiction of Miranda and Clegg’s relationship provokes the theme of power in multiple aspects of physicality, economi cally, of beauty, and verbally. Undeniably manifesting the question of who posses more power, Miranda or Clegg? The most prominent and evident aspect of power throughout the novel is physical power, in which Clegg solely posses. Before Clegg kidnapped Miranda, he never maintained power over anyone especially the people he cares about, as his mother abandoned him, and both his father and dear uncle died. Clegg’s former powerlessness seems to have induced him to desire a higher level of power that he obtains by capturing Miranda. He is able to abduct Miranda and posses her physical power due to the fact that he wins an immense sum of money, allowing him to purchase a house, thus the ability to maintain her. Clegg thereby controls every physical aspect of Miranda’s life; when she can shower, eat, go outside, how she lives her life, and even how she dies. This blatant aspect of control that Clegg hordes, entitles him to feel connected with Miranda, furthermore in possession of her. Along with his physical power, he also gains economic power over her. He believes he has a chance to wi n over her love by buying her whatever she desires ranging from expensive food delicacies to artwork and supplies. He employs his economic power over Miranda as a tool to magically make her fall in love with him, only further demonstrating the lack of sanity. Clegg feeds off of the economic and physical power he holds over Miranda, feeling entitled to a position of power that has been absent from his entire life. Moreover, he begins to feel heroic for being able to suffice Miranda with whatever she desires. Miranda begins to seem subordinate, powerless to Clegg, as she constantly has to ask him when she can have a bath, when she can go outside, and overall becomes dependent on him. The fact that Miranda must turn to Clegg for all the vital necessities of life, ensure Clegg that he has complete control over her. Perhaps, fulfilling a life long sense of thirst to have unabridged control of his environment, and the life it involves. Especially being able to capture and control beauty a s he does with his study of lepidoptery, seeing Miranda as a beautiful goddess in the form that all of society desire to posses. All though Clegg possesses unquestionable economic and physical power over Miranda, she possesses powerful beauty both verbally and physically that has an inordinate impact on Clegg. Miranda’s beauty can be interpreted by the viewer as a sense of power that she holds over Clegg as it lingers over his mindset like a controlling fog. In the sense that even when Miranda speaks to Clegg in a disgusting manner or acts exactly as he despises, he subconsciously excuses her putrid actions as he literally sees her as an enchanting personification of perfection. For example, â€Å"even when she did things considered ugly, like yawning or stretching, she made it seem pretty. The truth was she couldn’t do ugly things. She was too beautiful.† (The Collector, Page 48.) This quote may be more enlightening to the reader than what comes to mind at first as it applies to the overall relationship between Clegg and Miranda. The syntax of this salient quote describes ‘the truth ’ as her inability to do ugly things, which gives the reader insight into Clegg’s perception of Miranda. Possibly interpreted as Clegg feeling eternally inferior to her as he recognizes her immaculate beauty, but controversially that â€Å"†¦he doesn’t have what it is girls look for† (The Collector, page 11). Yet, his entirely consuming infatuation with Miranda continues to flourish. In addition, Miranda is easily able to express her emotions and thoughts through ardent language, especially her opinions on Clegg’s â€Å"killing of beautiful life†. Miranda despises Clegg’s lack of inner-depth of life. Since Miranda has a high level of education and very keenly observes Clegg, she uses her articulate verbal strength to deprecate Clegg, abating his sense of esteem and thereby inner confidence and power. His character is very weak in the sense that he easily conforms to Miranda’s beliefs and manipulation. Clegg lacks the abili ty to express his emotions or thoughts verbally, particularly without offending his beloved Miranda. It seems as if he instead tends to stay quiet, constituting Miranda’s words and beliefs as his own, even when she belittles him. Thus Clegg’s lack of confidence or verbal power to express himself antithetically conflicts with Miranda’s character that has an eloquent, educated manner of speech that empowers her to take jurisdiction in any of their interactions. In spite of the fact that Miranda has a manipulative verbal power over Clegg, she struggles immensely near the end of the book to maintain this power, which she relied upon as a latent technique of escape. Clegg’s lack of reality and sanity is continuously depicted through out the novel becoming a plausible asset to Miranda’s escape ideas. The reader understands that Clegg does not have a grip on reality as he is built upon euphemisms, claiming Miranda is ‘his guest’ instead of realistically his prisoner. He thereby abates the severity of the situation he has put Miranda in. Clegg’s oblivious perspective on the truth of his and Miranda’s relationship is a weakness on his part that entitles Miranda to a certain power. She is able to seduce him to believe he stands a chance to win her love, due to his illogical perspective. This seduction hopefully perchance leading to an action of good morality from his side of â€Å"the many† as John Fo wles would say, by liberating her. When Miranda fails to be set free by her utilization of Clegg’s irrationality to become his ideal ‘butterfly’, she approaches a vastly different method of manipulation. She mistakenly tries to sexually seduce Clegg right before she becomes dangerously ill. This act on Miranda’s behalf caused a momentous change in the battle for power within the novel. Clegg now sees her as â€Å"no better than a common street woman† as he comes to the realization that she is just like any other foolish, ordinary woman. Who fits perfectly in his narrowly perceived category of desperate women utilizing their bodies much like a whore to achieve what they want. As The Verbal Struggle for Power stated; â€Å"The way Clegg talks to her and treats her from that moment changes. †¦She can feel that she has no longer the power she had before. Now Clegg is more self-confident, he can say ‘no’ to Miranda, which he almost cou ld not do earlier.† As soon as Miranda offers herself to Clegg sexually, she loses all the power she inflicted on him before as he feels she is subordinate to him. This decisive act on Clegg’s part to show supremacy over her, allows him to accumulate exactly the key power he is missing earlier in their relationship. Triggering his harsh tone of language that shows Miranda who is the boss, fulfilling his need to feel overwhelmed by power and control, which he so desperately hunted for his entire life. All in all, the novel portrays how Miranda’s verbal power over Clegg and her beauty vanishes the minute she mentally gives up and uses what seems to her as the only way out, ‘sex’. From that moment on Clegg procures the confidence and control that he needed all along to feel empowered. Clegg always proclaimed his fascination with Miranda as love, however it appears that his consequential disgust and denigration of Miranda is not love. That he is happier now that he posses exhaustive control over Miranda, drunk from physical, economic, and verbal power. Clegg’s pathological infatuation with the power he has over Miranda results in his abuse of power, obtaining Miranda as an object of his control that invariably leads to her death.

Essay on Disobedience in William Shakespeares King Lear

Disobedience in William Shakespeares King Lear How sharper than a serpents tooth it is to have a thankless child. Filial disobedience is a key theme in the play King Lear and in both the times it was set and written, children were not expected to disobey their fathers. Jacobean England was an extremely hierarchical society meaning that respect should not only be shown to the powerful and rich but also to parents and the elderly. Seventeenth century England would have been more devout in terms of religion than today and undoubtedly a Jacobean audience would have been familiar with the fifth commandment, Honour thy father and mother. Lear, like any king, Pagan or otherwise, would have been†¦show more content†¦This is the source of Lears outrage and he cannot believe that his most beloved daughter would not only go against his wishes, but also against the basic expectations he has of his children. This helps Shakespeare to show what an unstable character Lear is because he does not realise that Cordelia has actually done w hat he has asked and told him how much she loves him. Lears emotions at this point swing between the extremes of love and anger because of this: Here I disclaim all my paternal care, Propinquity and property of blood And as a stranger to my heart and me. I.i.109-111 In his rage, Lear is willing to give up his love for his daughter even though he loves her immensely. It illustrates the fury and rash judgements that have become ingrained in his nature whilst king. He wants to prove to the court and possibly himself that, even though he is abdicating, he still wants to be seen as omnipotent. His self-importance and need for praise leads him to thinking that Cordelia has shamed him and therefore banishes her. In spite of Goneril and Regans obvious lies, Lear foolishly divides the kingdom between. Where Lear falls for their shallow lies, the audience sees through them and their sympathy lies with Cordelia. Humans And The Ai Possible Now - 2003 Words

Humans and the AI possible now, are truly one and the same What does this mean?. The Human body is but a foundry sundry? of systems and preconditioned thinking that is lead through cause and effect. AI is the pinnacle of humanity’s attempts at mimicking the creation of life through â€Å"artificial† thinking. John R. Searle argues that the intentionality in human beings is a product of the brains and its mental processes. He also notes that the certain brain processes are sufficient (indicating that there is at times a bare minimum of processes) for the â€Å"intentionality.† He also states that the instantiation of a computer program can be done by a human but the program would still lack the relevant intentionality. Searle also states that, â€Å"any mechanism capable of producing intentionality must have casual powers equal to those of the brain.† One important thing to note in Searle’s arguments is that he separates AI into two distinct categori es. Strong AI and weak AI. Strong AI being the advanced computers that are in fact, â€Å"minds,† and that these computers can actually understand things. Weak AI on the other hand, are the computers that act as nothing more than tools to be used to study and to serve any purpose we program it to do. Searle brings up several arguments that he refutes such as the â€Å"Systems Reply,† â€Å"The Robot reply,† â€Å"The Brain simulator reply,† â€Å"the combination reply,† â€Å"The other minds reply,† and â€Å"the many mansions reply.† The main argument thatShow MoreRelatedThe Controversy of Artificial Intelligence1476 Words   |  6 PagesThroughout its history, artificial intelligence has always been a topic with much controversy. An international manager is a broad title for someone who handles any and all interactions the business has on a national and global scale. They generally are responsible for all of the business that is conducted outside of the organization. There are often multiple people doing this job for bigger companies simply due to the size. They are broken down into smaller categories such as sales, marketing, and manufacturing. They must be culturally sensitive and know the business’ needs, and how to implements those in foreign markets. They also must be able to handle the political, cultural, and day-to-day challenges of doing business with other cultures. Furthermore, they must have a keen understanding of currency, and how that changes between countries. I chose to interview the individual I did because, as an owner of her own import-export business, she has great depth of experience in the field of international management. munication. 500 Days of Summer, which is one famous movie, we can recognize some important communication theory. In this paper, I would like to focus on the social penetration theory revealed in 500 Days of Summer. In this movie, some essential perspectives of penetration theory are revealed: depth and breadth of penetration, stages of the penetration theory, and verbal and non-verbal communication. In this essay, I am going to discuss these three characteristics revealed in the movie, 500 Days of Summer with my observations. First of all, depth and breadth of penetration is revealed in this movie. Firstly, the breadth of penetration is described by the Griffin (2009); â€Å"the range of areas in an individual’s life over which disclosure takes place†¦The breadth is the amount of information we disclose between two people.† In the case of the relationship between Tom and Summer we learned about, Tom’s breadth is his job, a fan of The Smith, and where he is f rom. In addition, for Summer, her breadth learned about her job, a fan of The Smith, and where she is from, and â€Å"Anal girl†. If I take one of example from these breadth, Summer does not tell when she started liking The Smiths, or how she discovered The Smiths, or what her favorite song by The Smiths is. None of that information is any more personal than â€Å"I love The Smiths.† I believe that the level of penetration is deep. As this story shows that at the first time they met, they talked small talk. Relevance to practice ( /20) Analysis of how ordinary nursing practice that may be perceived as extraordinary. Evidence of how the creative representation will enable your future practice to be authentic to your values and belief . Answer: Reflection on Nursing Care Nursing is considered as a fusion of science and art wherein the theoretical framework is formed by caring. Caring and nursing are based on a relational understanding, connection and unity between the patient and the nurse. The art of caring in nursing is based on the metaphysical and empirical knowledge that forms the science of nursing (Robinson 2014). The personal values and beliefs on caring as a nurse include human dignity, justice, privacy and human relationship. These values and belief form the spiritual and humanistic approach to the art of caring in the nursing profession (Boyd 2013). Justified intentional care, competence and compassion forms the core of caring and nurses are expected to develop these qualities while being in their profession (Robinson 2014). This assignment is a critical reflection of the personal values and beliefs on caring as a nurse of a situation that was based on a geriatric care ward for a patient with dementia, following Bortons developmental frame work. I am a registered nurse working in the medical ward of a multispecialty hospital and this reflection is about an incident where I perceived an ordinary practice of nursing as extraordinary. This reflective incident is about a 70 years old patient named Harry suffering from dementia and started at 7:30 am when my shift starts. It is common for the elderly to develop diseases like dementia and Alzheimers disease with the increase in life expectancy (Fong et al. 2015). Dementia is a condition where the mental ability gets declined and interferes with the activities of daily life like communicating, thinking and memory. This patient was aged and was suffering from a long time without much improvement in his condition and I was involved in his nursing care. From this situation, I was providing the essentials of nursing care for an elderly patient with dementia as the process was challenging and it is quite difficult to manage the patients without having an appropriate understanding of the disease process (Peters, Villeneuve and Belleville 2014). I made active participation in the caring process by providing a safe environment for the patient and it was very much important to treat them with respect and maintain their dignity (Baborie et al. 2012). Person centered care was adopted for providing care to the patient as it is beneficial for the patients of dementia since they are considered as individuals rather than focusing on their disabilities and illness. It helps to treat the patients with respect and dignity (Brooker and Latham 2015). Harry was happy on my arrival and when I approached him for a bath, he became forgetful and confused and it is necessary for the nurses to supervise the patients of dementia during the process. Although the process went smooth, it got derailed at the end when he was asked to leave the bath as he started shouting with swearing and personal insults as he did not want to get out. From the incident, I developed mixed feelings as I belie ved that a previously happy patient turned agitated and distressed due to my actions and this evoked a feeling of guilt that made me upset. Although I was aware that mood swings are a part of dementia, however, considering his condition of ill health made me sad. However, I was happy that I eased the situation and was able to calm him down. This entire situation was ordinary from the perspectives of a registered nurse as they are used to the aggression of the patients of dementia, however, my perception and learning from the incident made it extraordinary for me. When Harry was informed about the changes in his behavior after he was pacified and how I handled the situation, he perceived the situation as extraordinary as well. Although it was my duty to handle such situations with care and kindness, he was surprised how someone can be kind when the patient is going rough and abusive. This was the perception of Harry of my patient centered care for his dementia and he perceived my ord inary nursing care as extraordinary. The outcome of this perception was beneficial for the treatment as he co-operated with me in his other care processes. During my process of pacifying Harry, I had a number of things going on in my mind. I was trying to apply the knowledge and theory of nursing care to get over this embarrassing situation created by Harry during his bath. His reactions were based on the thought that he will be allowed to do whatever he wish without any restriction and my actions were based on the scientific and ethical grounds of nursing care. On stopping him, he outburst with anger and this somewhat frightened and shocked me. However, the reaction was handled with care and I was there with him to calm him down as it was my professional and ethical obligation not to abandon the patient during the process of nursing care (van der Steen et al. 2013). According to the person-centered nursing framework, I was expected to provide holistic care and engagement to the patient and this was the reason I could not leave the patient on his time of discomfort. I was aware of the knowledge of the nursing care for the patient with d ementia and in such cases of patient anger, the most effective way to handle the situation is redirection of the topic in a firm and calm manner (Borson et al. 2013). This will ensure patient safety and reduce his confusion of expression of thoughts and following instructions. However, distracting his attention towards some other direction with the help of playful activities could have served the purpose effectively and made the situation better (Baborie et al. 2012). From the situation, I understood that even trivial events could bring about sudden changes in the mood of the patient with dementia that can even lead to aggression that has to be handled with appropriate patience and care, without leaving the patient. The broader issue that needs to be considered in this incident to make it successful is based on the critical analysis of why and where it went wrong that caused Harry to get angry Patients with dementia needs to be communicated in a way that makes them comfortable, based on the principles of person centered care of nursing (Borson et al. 2013). During his bathing process, if I communicated with Harry with small talks to distract him, the embarrassment could have been avoided (Catic et al. 2014). The consequence of this action could have made him feel ease with the situation and he could have avoided the verbal aggression (van der Steen et al. 2013). From this incident, I learned this skill which I will implement in my future cases of nursing care for the patients with dementia. I also realized that the curricula of the nursing schools should expand to include the courses on gerontology and geriatrics for providing specialized training for preparing the future nurses to provide optim al care to the patients with dementia and avoid such embarrassing situation to confuse and aggravate the patients. By reflecting on this incident, I have identified the gaps that I had in my knowledge regarding the nursing care of the patients with dementia that I bridged as the treatment progressed. Using Bortons developmental framework through action and reflection enabled me to develop the knowledge that is required in the practice of nursing (Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper 2001). Action and reflection as the core values enabled me as a nurse to work with the patients suffering from mental health and support their families by enabling mutual learning and co-production of the knowledge (Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper 2001). In this reflection, I used the framework of my theoretical knowledge and practical experiences to get over the problematic situation and established a dynamic theory of nursing practice. Interconnectedness of Resources and Capabilities9 4. Conclusion10 5. 0 Bibliography11 6. 0. Appendix13 1. Introduction: 1. 2 Company Portray: The Volkswagen Group is one of the leading automobile producers in the world, delivering more than 9 million cars, generating sales of â‚ ¬193 billion and profits of â‚ ¬21. 9 billion in 2012 (Volkswagen Group, 2013). The group markets low- consumption small cars, luxury cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles under its 12 brands: Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT, MAN, Bentley, Scania, Bugatti, Lamborghini Porsche, Ducati and Volkswagen commercial vehicles. The group employs 550,000 people worldwide and operates 100 production facilities in 27 different countries, while selling its products in 153 countries (Volkswagen Group, 2013). The Group has recently launched â€Å"Strategy 2018†, with the goal of becoming the biggest automotive company in the world in terms of volume, by selling more than 10 million cars and trucks annually. Additionally the group seeks to elevate its profit margin to 8% (Taylor, 2012). Given Volkswagen existing strength and its ambitions for the near term future the firm must be regarded as one of the world’s most potent transnational companies. 1. Method of Analysis: An international competitive advantage can either be derived from the external environment a company resides in, or through its internal strategic and structural orientation (Sitkin and Bowen, 2013). To fully appreciate and understand the formation of the Volkswagen Group’s international competitive advantage it is essential to analyse its external sources first, scrutinize their interplay within Michael Porter’s ‘Diamond’ structure, and subsequently take note of the internal choices and decisions the managers of Volkswagen face in the quest to generate a sustainable international competitive advantage. . 0 External Sources Michael Porter has identified factor conditions, demand conditions and supporting and related industries as the three primary external sources of competitive advantage. Firm strategy, structure and rivalry complement Porter’s ‘Diamond† structure and aim to describe the impact the environment has on the internal orientation and disposition of a firm (Sitkin and Bowen, 2013). Thus it evaluates external circumstances’ direct impact on a company’s structure. Porter’s Diamond of National Competitive Advantage Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry Demand Conditions Demand Conditions Factor Conditions Factor Conditions Related and Supporting Industries Related and Supporting Industries Adapted from (Porter, 1990) 2. 1 Factor Conditions Factors of production at their most basic level constitute labour, land natural resources, capital, and infrastructure. According to traditional trade theories unlimited access to these basic factors marks a substantial advantage for industries (Porter, 1990). Today’s notions however, place significantly more emphasis on highly specialized, productivity-enhancing factors, resulting from sustained and heavy investment, as a source of competitive advantage (Porter, 1990). Germany offers two factors that are particularly appealing to the automotive industry: a highly specialized work force and an internationally renowned infrastructure. Of Germany’s 40 million people strong workforce 80% have enjoyed vocational training or hold an academic degree (Appendix 1). Scientists and engineers constitute around 6. 7% (Appendix 2) of the countries total workforce and 31% of all university level students are engaged in scientific or engineering studies giving further evidence for the workforce’s high compatibility to the needs of the automotive industry (GTAI, 2013a). Germany also offers an internationally unique dual education system, which combines on-the-job and vocational school training, thus guaranteeing industry relevant and specific training (GTAI, 2013b). Volkswagen has also benefited from stable labour costs and gradually falling unit labour cost of roughly 0. 3% a year between 2005 and 2010 (Appendix 3). This trend has led to a considerable competitive cost advantage for all German manufacturers (GTAI, 2013a). Germany’s infrastructure ranks second in the world in terms of quality behind Hong Kong’s (Appendix 4). This state of the art infrastructure allows Volkswagen to quickly and reliably move its in- and outputs. Additionally Volkswagen benefits from its relative proximity to Bremerhaven, the world’s largest carport for vehicle traffic (GTAI, 2013f). 2. 2 Demand Conditions Domestic demand has the potential to be an effective source of competitive advantage. Highly informed and demanding customers will exercise significant pressure on companies to continuously innovate and upgrade their products and services (Porter, 1990). Furthermore, a competitive advantage can arise from a customer base that is indicative of global demand trends, or better, shapes customer needs and wants elsewhere. If these conditions are given a company will be pushed to generate the most advanced products or services prior to demand spreading elsewhere in the world (Porter, 1990) The German consumer is probably the most demanding and sophisticated automobile consumer in the world. German consumers have traditionally set high standards in terms of engineering, design and safety, but due to rising fuel prices and environmental concerns in Germany, the spectrum of demands has grown even wider (The Economist, 2007). These high standards have enticed innovations in the past resulting in developments such as the four-wheel-drive system and continue to push VW ahead of its international competitors (Taylor, 2012). In an effort to tackle environmental concerns the VW Group recently committed to reducing the average emissions of its Volkswagen fleet to just 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre by 2020 (Volkswagen Group, 2013). It has also launched an ambitious project to produce the world’s most fuel-efficient car; the XL1, underlining the impact he German consumer has on Volkswagen’s goals and innovative spirit (Taylor, 2012). 2. 3 Related and Supporting Industries A close relationship with related and supporting industries, which are internationally competitive themselves, can reap rich rewards for firms (Porter, 1990). Through the formation of ‘clusters’, which are interconnected businesses and institutions working in close proximity to one another, firms can source the most cost-effective inputs in an efficient and quick manner (Sitkin and Bowen, 2013). More importantly, companies benefit from a rapid and constant exchange of information over new innovations, technology, and industry and consumer trends. The exchange of information coupled with very close personal relationships existing within clusters greatly improves a company’s prospect of attaining an international competitive advantage (Porter, 1990) The related and supporting network for the automotive industry in Germany is particularly strong. A total of five distinct automotive clusters exist in Germany (Autoanalysis, 2005). It is an international technological leader in crucial supporting industries to the automotive industry including machine building and electronics (GTAI, 2013b). Volkswagen derives particular advantage from the existence of the ‘Silicon Saxony’ cluster, which is located in its neighbouring state and currently ranks among the top five semiconductor clusters in the world (GTAI, 2013c). Furthermore Germany is the unquestionable world leader in machinery and equipment production, compromising almost 6,300 companies along the value chain and accounting for 17% of the world’s global machinery trade share (GTAI, 2013d). The automotive and electronics sector are also two of the biggest customers of the machine and equipment sector, demonstrating the strong cohesion of the German industrial sector (GTAI, 2013d). Volkswagen also derives great benefit from the existence of cutting-edge logistic firms in Germany, which spur the rapid and efficient transport of in-and outputs (GTAI, 2013e). 2. 4 Firm Strategy, Structure and Rivalry The national environment a firm resides in has a significant influence over the firm’s structure, strategy and nature of rivalry. Different cultural backgrounds favour varied managerial approaches and firm structures, which may be suited better to one industry rather than another. A competitive advantage can arise where a firm’s managerial practices, as favoured by the country it resides in, are particularly well suited to respond to the demands of the industry it competes in (Porter, 1990) Domestic competition is arguably the most important factor of Porter’s ‘Diamond’ model, due to the influence it exercises over the remaining facets. Fierce rivalry forces companies to continuously innovate and upgrade to remain in a competitive position nationally. Domestic competition not only toughens companies prior to international expansion, it is frequently the cause for their expansion (Porter, 1990). German culture favours hierarchical organisational structures and technical know-how is widely dispersed throughout top management. In return German companies have traditionally excelled in technically complex industries, where precision is a major determinant of success (Porter, 1990). These set of values and expertise have evidently backed Volkswagen’s path to becoming one of the premiere car manufactures and aided in its accumulation of unique resources and capabilities. Germany has traditionally been home to fierce domestic rivalry in the automotive sector. The Volkswagen Group competes intensively with its Audi and Porsche brands against BMW and Mercedes. The prestige of building the best car in Germany is immense and hence the competition is beyond financials and defiantly carries a personal note. 2. 5. VW ‘Diamond’ System It is critical to assess each of the determinant factors as part of the system of the ‘Diamond’ model. None of the determinants on its own is likely to result in a significant competitive advantage, as the state of one factor depends on the state of another (Porter, 1990). As all the individual determinants for VW are favourable, they perform a self-reinforcing cycle, where the benefits of innovation are spread across the entire automotive cluster. 3. 0. Internal Sources The foundation for developing competitive advantage internally lies with the managers’ ability to generate unique firm-specific resources and capabilities (Duhaime, Stimpert amp; Chesley, 2012b). Performance And Competitive Advantage Performance And Competitive Advantage Market Position, Resources, Capabilities Market Position, Resources, Capabilities Feedback Feedback Decision Making Decision Making Managers’ Mental Models Managers’ Mental Models Adapted from (Duhaime, Stimpert amp; Chesley, 2012) Such resources and capabilities need to be valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable in order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Sustainable Competitive Advantage Not a resource Competitive parity Temporary Competitive Advantage Temporary Competitive Advantage No No No No Adapted From (Warner, 2010; Hoskisson amp; Co, 2008) Duhaime, Stimpert and Chesley (2012b) indicate that through the utilization of the factors of time, building on past success, interconnectedness of resources and capabilities, investment and casual ambiguity managers can back the resource accumulation process and support the development of sustainable competitive advantages. Volkswagen’s international success in recent years can be attributed to two primary internal factors: the firm’s unconventional organisational structure and its tremendous interconnectedness of resources and capabilities. 3. 1. Decentralized Structure The Volkswagen Group’s corporate structure is highly decentralized and grants large autonomy to each of its 12 individual brands. Each brand is treated as a stand-alone company with its own board of directors, annual reports and individual design, engineering and manufacturing facilities (McElroy, 2012). While this approach contradicts general corporate notions, which encourage centralization to eliminate duplication of work and cut costs, VW is the world’s most profitable car manufacturer (McElroy, 2012). In fact its structure is strikingly similar to General Motors’ under its illustrious CEO Alfred Sloan. Sloan’s concept was based on offering GM’s various brands at different, yet overlapping price points (Duhaime Stimpert amp; Chesley, 2012b). The idea was to offer an ascending range of cars and allow a customer to gradually mount GM’s product scale over the course of his life (Duhaime, Stimpert amp; Chesley, 2012b). Similarly the Volkswagen Group offers an ascending and differentiated product range that allows consumers to upgrade over the course of their life and still remain customers of the Volkswagen Group. This poses a substantial competitive advantage, as none of VW’s international or domestic competitors offers an equally diverse and differentiated product range. 3. 2. Interconnectedness of Resources and Capabilities The more interconnected the resources of a firm are the more likely it is for the firm to use them in an efficient manner that will enhance the company’s overall performance. Similar to the existence of clusters in the external environment firms benefit from an intensive internal exchange of information and cooperation to foster innovation (Duhaime, Stimpert and Chesley, 2012a) Despite the Volkswagen Group’s decentralised corporate structure its resources and capabilities are highly interconnected and centralized. This interconnection is essentially the key to the company’s significant competitive advantage, and allow for the decentralized structure to work so effectively. Under its ‘toolkit strategy’ VW uses the same basic components for numerous models consequently lowering engineering, procurement and manufacturing costs (Taylor, 2012). Hence the key to its competitive advantage lies in differentiating its brands while using the same components in production and successfully employing economics of scale. As a result of the modular longitudinal matrix (MLB) introduced in 2007, Audi is now able to produce its entire product range with the same basic parts. Moreover VW will launch a new program called the modular transverse matrix (MQB) that will standardize critical parts in more than 40 small cars. When the integration is complete and successful it is estimated that VW could realise annual savings of $3 billion and further boost its scale and cost advantage (Taylor, 2012). 4. Conclusion The Volkswagen Group has been tremendously successful in generating an international competitive advantage over recent years. By productively utilizing Germany’s favourable external environment and through unconventional strategic and structural implementations the Volkswagen Group has become the most profitable automaker in the world. Strategy 2018† and the implementation of the modular transverse matrix (MQB) are bound to enhance VW’s advantage over its competitors even further. Therefore, its goal of becoming the biggest automaker by volume in 2018 seems all but certain. 5. 0 Bibliography AutoAnalysis, 2005, Benchmarking Study of European Automotive Clusters. pp. 16 Duhaime, I. Women in Literature an Example by

Women in Literature Some critics claim that early American literature focuses on men, overlooking or devaluating the role of women and womens perspective. The response to this claim will presuppose profound analysis of some literary work of that time period. We will thus concentrate on Hannah Fosters The Coquette, which has become one of the brightest representations of the then literature. Need essay sample on "Women in Literature" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed Based upon the discussed reading, it is definitely impossible to state that literature of the analyzed period was devaluating women, though such claim has the objective right to exist among scholars. It would probably be more correct to assume that devaluation of women, which the authors of early American literature were depicting in their works, was caused by the real life conditions in which they lived. Thus, devaluating women was not the initial purpose of the early American writing; in pursuing realism and the truth, the writers were undeservingly labeled. However, this misinterpretation cannot be totally false. Through the prism of literary criticism, the character of the protagonist Eliza Wharton is certainly described in rather mournful colors. What is usual for us seems absolutely unacceptable in the world in which Eliza found herself. Thus, it would be more objective to analyze Fosters novel not from the viewpoint of devaluating women, but from the viewpoint of the then soci ety devaluating and not accepting their freedom, as was reflected in The Coquette. Reading The Coquette, we come to the question, whether Foster was depicting a true womanhood, and how a woman of her status could feel in the society and people by whom she was surrounded. It is difficult to deny that Eliza Wharton was initially overlooked as a personality by her companions, friends, and was truly judged for her actions and manners. Of course, what we see in Eliza does not surprise us, but her behavior could not be called traditional through the prism of the then manners. The true woman of that time had to possess several integral features, out of which virtue and domesticity were the most meaningful. Moreover, in case a woman did not possess those features, or was not willing to follow the principles of the society, she risk being abandoned, being stigmatized, and being called the enemy of all polite people. Through the entire reading of The Coquette I was accompanied by the thought that it would be improper to state, that Foster was devaluating women. I think that the author had devoted the whole story to the inner perplexities of the female character. The writer has exercised an extremely visible and wise tool for creating and objective (and simultaneously, subjective) picture of the reality. We see the development of Whartons affair with Major Stanford, and simultaneously we have an access to the inner world and inner conflicts of each of the characters in the novel. Devaluating women is more seen not in the way Foster depicted Eliza, but in the way Eliza would be treated in the society of her time. Simultaneously, Major Stanford is considered to be rejected by a virtuous society for having seduced women and being known for his bad reputation. It is even more surprising that Stanfords behavior is not equal to devaluating women; but the reaction of the society to Whartons behavior is. Objectively, Foster was focusing on how men perceived the reality, and how they perceived women around them. Through the correspondence between several men in the novel we are capable of making an insight into their souls. However, in the context of the reality which Foster described in her work, focusing on men was a literary necessity, and limiting my research by this work of writing is not sufficient to conclude that the claims of critics towards devaluating women in literature are at least relevant. Eliza in Fosters world has become the embodiment of violating the norms of the society in which she lived. She was the proof that the society was constantly devaluating women. She has become the bright revelation of the then female world. She has a difficult marriage, through which she did not experience any warm feelings to her ceased husband, but whom she had to marry upon her parents request. Mr. Haly was a man of worth, a man of real and substantial merit. He is therefore deeply, and justly regretted by his friends; he was chosen to be a future guardian, and companion for me, and was, therefore, beloved by mine. As their choice as a good man, and a faithful friend, I esteemed him. But no one acquainted with the disparity of our tempers and dispositions, our views and designs, can suppose my heart much engaged in the alliance. (Foster 807) Being similar to Major Stanford in her temptations, even he had to admit the conflict of her inner identity with the society: Her sagacious friends have undoubtedly given her a detail of my vices. If therefore, my past conduct has been repugnant to her notions of propriety, why does she act consistently, and refuse at once to associate with a man whose character she cannot esteem? (Foster 863). In her grief for losing husband, she was not looking for consolation, but was realizing the fact of her ultimately being free of those connections. Moreover, she was seeking consolation not among her friends, but in the fact of being free to choose; in this she was completely different from her female friends, and was constantly judged and warned against Major Stanford. Of course, she was seduced by him, and he never realized the seriousness of his claims on Eliza. She in her turn did not understand that she was misled, and had to abandon her traditional pathway of virtue (so valued in the then society) to be with that man. It was not that Foster was devaluing Eliza, but she was trying to remain within the limits of the traditional society; she could not allow herself openly declaring the fact of Eliza being correct in her moves. This is why the author had to use implicit tools and literary devices for us to understand the true meaning of her writing. The visible devaluation of Eliza was actually the expression of her strength against the widely accepted (and often absurd) norms. In one of her letters, Eliza was writing: Should it ever be my fate to wear the hymenical chain, may I be thus united! The purest and most ardent affection, the greatest consonance of taste and disposition, and the most congenial virtue and wishes distinguish this lovely couple (Foster 813). These were Elizas ideas about her happy union with some man. And while come critics might claim that the image of a woman in early American literature was at least neglected, it can be easily argued. What Foster was aiming was to display the societal constraints in which the woman of her time had to exist. For Eliza this hardly looked like existence, being similar to surviving. Her mind was disconcerted with the emotional agitations, and she could not find moral satisfaction in any of the two men with whom she communicated. it is understandable why Foster depicted both Boyer and Major Stanford in so many details: we needed to have a detailed understanding, why the woman could not have any affecti on towards any of them, especially of Boyer. Boyers character consisted of traditional virtues praised by society: he was striving for domestic and loving wife, who would not allow going out or having friendship with men. He could not also understand her patience and indecisiveness towards his personality. The meaning of the name The Coquette was brilliantly expressed in Elizas interactions with Boyer and Major Stanford. The name of the novel has become the sign of the false appearance we attribute to people whom we dont really know, or do not want to understand through the existing social norms. She was far from being a coquette; she was looking for the person who could comply with her social demands and who could not restrain her social strivings, but she found none, being dishonored and finally led to death. Devaluation of a woman was shown by Foster as punishable even within the described societal constraints. Both Boyer and Major Stanford were virtually punished for misunderstanding the true identity of Eliza Warton. Hannah Foster has created a perfect image of all three characters, letting us into the hidden world of concealed emotions and cherished emotions. Surely, she had displayed the situation of a woman when being dishonored and obviously devaluated by those who surrounded her, but the writer herself did not devaluate Eliza. On the contrary, she seemed to having achieved the aim of her writing: she was sincerely mourning the death of her protagonist. Foster succeeded in depicting the possible tragic consequences of the societal norms impact on peoples lives. No one could predict that Elizas striving to be social would lead her to being called the Coquette, but the society did not leave any other choice, and Eliza would have to live with that stigma. Moreover, Boyer did not also leave Eliza any options except for writing her a farewell letter and expressing his extreme dissatisfaction and anger with her behavior; however, and in the context of the contemporary society, we should think what right he had to intrude into Elizas life. Thus, the devaluation of the womens perspective is not viewed in the early American writing itself, but in the real situation of women in the then society, which the writers had to evaluate and judge. Conclusion Critics have the right to claim the position of a woman in the early American literature is devaluated. However, it was more real than neglected. The example of Fosters The Coquette we come to understanding the inner force of the woman in trying to break the societal norms and failing to do so. Hannah Foster has succeeded in creating an image of a woman new to her traditional society, being devaluated by it, but not by the realism of Fosters writing. Works Cited Foster, H. W.
